Thousands of Florida’s most vulnerable residents — including veterans and seniors — are missing out on surplus funds they’re legally entitled to after foreclosure. Advocates say many in these groups are unaware they must file a court claim to receive any excess funds after their home sells.
“We’re seeing older homeowners with memory or mobility issues lose access to funds simply because no one told them how to claim it,” said nonprofit housing advocate Eric Monroe.
Efforts are underway to expand surplus fund outreach and partner with senior service agencies and VA offices statewide.
