As more family homes are lost to foreclosure following the death of a homeowner, counselors are urging surviving relatives to check court records for surplus equity. These funds can legally be claimed by heirs — even years later.
“The home may be gone, but there could be thousands left behind in the court,” said a housing advocate.
Probate partners and recovery groups are now offering free claim reviews for surviving heirs.
